brewerania - collectible german beer steins

The word stein comes from the German word, steinzeugkrug, which is a stoneware carafe or jug.  Germany, the land where beer is more common than water, is also known for their elaborately decorated and hand painted beer steins.  The difference between a beer stein and a mug is that the stein usually has a hinged lid.  The lid was originally a sanitary measure taken after the times of the Bubonic Plague.

DUMB MIKEY

Mikey walks into a pet store a buys some gold fish.  He brings them home and then realizes he doesn’t know what to feed them so he calls his girlfriend.  She comes over and they go and buy some fish food.  Mikey is all excited and he and his girlfriend hurriedly feed the fish, then Mikey turns to his her and says, “they look a little thirsty too, what should we give them to drink?”

history of the teapot - vintage collectible teapots

Some people believe that the teapots were invented by the Chinese.  In fact, according to some, the potters of Ishing, which is north of Shanghai were the first to introduce the first vessels now known as teapots. Others claim that although China did introduce tea to Europe, it was the Europeans that actually invented the teapot.  This group of people claims that the Chinese could not have introduced the teapot because the Chinese actually brewed their tea directly in their cup.  Whatever their origin, the teapot has been an essential part of many households for many years and now many other people collect them.

O.J. and his memorabilia

As I recently read the articles that appeared in every newspaper and magazine about O.J. Simpson and his latest caper of stealing his own memorabilia, I said to myself, “geez . . . he would be the only one who would want it.”  Who in their right mind would collect anything O.J. or for that matter anything to do with Michael Vick and “has beens” like them? The only other person who would want to grab that junk is Fred Goldman because of his vendetta against Simpson.  Serious collectors and those collecting as an investment I would think would rather stay away from that stuff.

In the early 1500’s many German municipalities had passed laws governing the covering of food and drink, thus the hinged lid on what once was a mug.  In addition, German beer halls also began to flourish at about the same time and people began buying personal steins that they would take to these halls.  The practice of keeping a stein at your local tavern is still done in certain parts of Germany.  This brought about the ornate and beautiful steins we collect today.

Some of the earliest steins were a status symbol for many Germans and were made of stoneware and decorated with carved and applied shields and historical scenes.  They were painted and glazed by hand and it took many hours to create a single stein.  The most recent steins are still decorated in the same way and many can be seen with the cobalt blue and chocolate saltglaze that was first used back in the day.

During the Victorian period, when having “high tea” when visitors called or on that special Sunday afternoon, people would only use their highly prized and most richly decorated teapots.  The design and decoration of these teapots which were usually hand painted were quite lavish.  Later during the Art Deco period of the 20’s and 30’s, teapots took on different shapes and looks, some with severe lines and were made of different metals, unlike their earlier cousins that were mainly made of the best porcelains.

unusual collections - yossie's handcuffs

Smith & Wesson, better known for making guns, is also maker of a line of handcuffs since 1920.  Their website states, “When you put a pair of handcuffs on a suspect, only one word can describe your expectations . . . confidence.”  For Yossie Silverman, confidence is knowing that he probably has one of the largest collections of handcuffs in the world.  Yossie started by placing his small collection on the Internet in 1995.  Since then, his collection has grown to over 369 handcuffs and other restraints and some of his collection takes up to 66 square feet of wall space in his bedroom. But that’s not all . . . in addition to his handcuff collection, his website also features a list of museums and links to other places where you might find handcuffs and other types of restraints.  Yossie's Handcuff Collection
